Ted English is the Executive Chairman of Bob’s Discount Furniture and the former president and CEO of the TJX Companies, Inc. Since joining Bob’s Discount Furniture in 2006, he has more than doubled the store base and nearly tripled sales, placing Bob’s among the top 15 furniture stores in the US. During his five-year tenure as CEO of TJX, Mr. English increased revenues by over $6 billion and opened over 900 stores across eight domestic and international divisions.
Mr. English has over 40 years of retailing experience, starting as a stock boy at Filene’s Basement in Boston. Working his way through high school and college, he joined TJX as a buyer in 1983, and held positions of increasing responsibility over the course of his 22 years with the company. He has been recognized by numerous organizations for his work in the corporate arena and the community and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Framingham State College for his immediate and compassionate corporate leadership when seven TJX associates were killed in the September 11 terrorist attacks. Mr. English was also on the founding board of the national Welfare to Work Program, creating over 30,000 jobs at TJX for former welfare recipients, and was recognized as the Humanitarian of the Year by the Cardinal Cushing Centers for his work with children with special needs.
