Mr. Smail was a financial services senior executive with Fidelity Investments through June 2008. He enjoyed a 20-year career launching and building businesses for Fidelity Investments, including its stand-alone institutional investment management arm and 401(k) business. He joined Fidelity Institutional Retirement Services Company in 1987 and became its president in 1996. Five years later he was selected as president of Fidelity's total employee benefits outsourcing business, and in 2005 was chosen as president and CEO to launch and lead Pyramis Global Advisors, a new Fidelity investment management subsidiary serving institutional investors.
Prior to 1987, Mr. Smail held executive positions at BayBanks and New England Mutual Life Insurance Company. He is currently retired and serving as the trustee of the Employee Benefit Research Institute. He also served on the board of directors of Fidelity Management Trust Company, Fidelity Investments-Canada, and Pyramis Global Advisors.
Mr. Smail earned a BS, with honors, in business management from Northeastern University.
